The late Ibrahim Ahmadu Coomassie was a prominent figure who left a lasting legacy in policing and leadership in Nigeria. He served as the 9th Inspector General of Police (IGP), known for his integrity, patriotism, and dedication to public service.
He was born on March 18, 1942, in the city of Katsina, into a respected and educated family. His father, Malam Ahmadu Coomassie, was a renowned scholar and government official. The name “Coomassie” is linked to the city of Kumasi in Ghana, where his ancestors once lived before returning to Katsina.
He attended Provincial Secondary School, now known as Government College Katsina, and later went to Barewa College in Zaria — an institution that produced many prominent leaders in Northern Nigeria and the country at large.
To further develop his expertise in security, he received training at several institutions both locally and internationally, including the Detective Training School in Wakefield, United Kingdom.
He joined the Nigerian Police Force in 1964 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent and rose steadily through the ranks with excellence and integrity, serving as:
- Commissioner of Police in several states, including Kano and Lagos
- Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG)
- Inspector General of Police from 1993 to 1999
As IGP, he led the police force during a critical period in Nigeria’s history, particularly during the transition from military to civilian rule.
After retirement, he continued to serve Northern Nigeria and the country. He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and held the traditional title of Sardaunan Katsina — one of the highest titles in the Katsina Emirate.
Ibrahim Coomassie is remembered as a disciplined, fair, and trustworthy leader. He stood for truth, upheld dignity, and consistently advocated for unity among Nigerians.
He passed away on July 19, 2018, and was laid to rest in Rimin Badawa, Katsina, in accordance with Islamic rites.
His life remains an inspiration to young people who aspire to serve their country with honesty and honor.
